What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.
The world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education, work, and global migration. By studying for IELTS you will not only be preparing for the test but also for the future as a student in an English speaking environment. The test is designed to access your ability to understand and produce writing and spoken language in an educational context.

Description of the test

There are two versions of the IELTS test:

  • Academic Module: IELTS Academic is intended for students seeking entry to a university or institution of higher education offering degree and diploma courses.
  • General Training Module: Training is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.

There’s also a separate test offered by the IELTS test partners, called IELTS Life Skills.
— IELTS Life Skills is intended for those who need to prove their English speaking and listening skills at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level A1 or B1 and can be used to apply for a ‘family of a settled person’ visa, indefinite leave to remain or citizenship in the UK. Click Link1, Link 2 and Life Skills FAQs for more details.

There are four parts to the test.

WHAT IS THE TEST FORMAT?

— IELTS consists of six modules. All candidates must take a test for each of the four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules. There is a choice of Reading and Writing modules according to whether a candidate is taking the Academic or General Training version of the test.

IELTS Test Format

You should seek advice from a teacher or a student adviser if you are in any doubt about whether to sit for the Academic modules or the General Training modules. The two do not carry the same weight and are not interchangeable.
