In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
In recent years, there has been a growing debate about whether it is more beneficial to invest in new high-speed railway lines or to improve existing public transport systems. While some argue that the construction of new railway lines for very fast trains between cities is essential, others believe that the money should be spent on enhancing the current public transport infrastructure. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and provide my own opinion on the matter.
Proponents of building new high-speed railway lines argue that it would greatly benefit the economy and the environment. They claim that these trains would provide a faster and more efficient mode of transportation, reducing travel time between cities and stimulating economic growth. Additionally, high-speed trains are often seen as a more environmentally friendly alternative to air travel, as they produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, investing in new railway lines is seen as a way to promote sustainable development.
On the other hand, those who advocate for improving existing public transport argue that it is a more practical and cost-effective solution. They believe that the money should be allocated to upgrading and expanding current transportation systems, such as buses, trams, and subways, in order to provide better access to public transportation for a larger number of people. This would not only reduce traffic congestion and air pollution but also make public transport more accessible and convenient for residents.
In my opinion, while the construction of new high-speed railway lines can bring about significant benefits, it is essential to prioritize the improvement of existing public transport systems. This is because a well-functioning and accessible public transport network is crucial for the daily lives of a large portion of the population. By investing in the enhancement of public transport, cities can reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and provide affordable and efficient transportation options for residents.
In conclusion, while the construction of new high-speed railway lines may have its benefits, I believe that the focus should be on improving existing public transport systems. This would not only benefit a larger number of people but also contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transportation network.
