Sample Answer:

In today’s society, the issue of crime and how to effectively reduce it is a topic of great concern. Some individuals believe that the most effective way to cut the crime rate is by building more prisons and making prison sentences longer. However, I strongly disagree with this opinion and believe that there are more effective and humane ways to address the issue of crime.

First and foremost, simply building more prisons and increasing the length of prison sentences does not address the root causes of crime. Many individuals who turn to a life of crime do so as a result of socio-economic factors, lack of education, or mental health issues. By focusing solely on punishment through incarceration, we fail to address these underlying issues and ultimately perpetuate a cycle of crime.

Furthermore, the idea of building more prisons and increasing prison sentences is not only ineffective but also extremely costly. The construction and maintenance of prisons require a significant amount of financial resources, which could be better allocated to preventative measures such as education, mental health services, and community outreach programs. By investing in these areas, we can address the root causes of crime and work towards preventing individuals from turning to criminal behavior in the first place.

In addition, the concept of longer prison sentences does not necessarily serve as a deterrent to crime. Research has shown that the severity of punishment does not necessarily deter individuals from committing crimes. Instead, it is the likelihood of being caught and the swiftness of punishment that have a greater impact on deterring criminal behavior.

In conclusion, while building more prisons and making prison sentences longer may seem like a quick fix to the issue of crime, I believe that it is not an effective or humane approach. Instead, we should focus on addressing the root causes of crime through preventative measures and rehabilitation programs. By investing in education, mental health services, and community outreach, we can work towards creating a society where individuals are less likely to turn to a life of crime.
